The Walk

We had decided that we would stay at our son Nicolas' apartment during Wes' time in Health Sciences. We drove in Sunday night and early Monday morning we drove off to the hospital for what we thought would be the biggest day of our lives.

When we walked in Fred & Jolene Stoesz were waiting for us, Fred had had a similar surgery the year before and was doing very well. They prayed with us before we hit the admissions desk and then we were off to the day surgery on the third floor. Yes, you read that right! Apparently brain surgery is only considered a day surgery!

Wes changed into his beautiful floral apparel and we sat and waited for the nurse to come back and begin his IV before surgery. He needed to have a certain amount of antibiotics, steroids and I forget what was in the third bag, in his body before they began. About 20 minutes later another nurse came back and very abruptly said "You're not going to like me, but your surgery has been cancelled for today!" And she walked off.

Wes and I stood there and stared at one another wondering if this was really happening. I pulled his clothes back out of the bag and handed them to him, he changed and we walked out to the nurses station who sent us back to the neurological department. We needed to go home, they said, and wait for a call from the neurological department as to when his surgery would happen. We thanked them for their time and walked out.

People have asked if we weren't upset, but you know, we weren't. Again, there was nothing that we could do to change it and getting angry or upset at them would have accomplished nothing. so, we went back to Nic's apartment and after Wes had rested for a bit we decided to go for a long walk. We talked about so many things. Our life so far, reminiscing and laughing, talking about our greatest fears, our hopes for the future and even the ugly things like, if something goes seriously wrong, what kind of funeral do you want?

When I asked that last question, he squeezed my hand as we continued walking and said "I don't really care, I won't be there. Just make sure that the message of Jesus Christ is preached. Don't let anyone preach about me, that's a waste of time, just make sure they tell everyone there about Jesus."

"I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life." John 5:24
