A Better Deal

For the past couple of months I've been looking for new glasses.  Not eye glasses, although I love shopping for those, but for drinking glasses.  The ones I had purchased years ago were slowing thinning out and the one thing I never liked about them was the bottoms.  When you had them in the dishwasher the yucky water in the dishwasher stayed in the shallow dip at the base of the cup.  So every time the dishwasher was done I had to grab a tea towel and sop up the water that had gathered.
I was having a hard time finding what I wanted, I went to all the really nice high end shops in the city and found nothing that I really liked.  Then one day I was in Altona wandering around The Bargain Shop while our Avalanche was being serviced at West Park and I found them!  I was so excited especially because I thought they were a bargain at $20. The down side was that they only had a dozen of them, but I snagged them hoping that somewhere I would find more.
A couple of months later we went to Grand Forks for the weekend and lo and behold we found the exact same glasses in WalMart for $10 for a dozen.  It was a little frustrating that there was such a drastic price difference, but I swallowed my pride and grabbed another dozen placing them gently in the cart happy that I now had the type of glasses that I wanted, for the price that I was comfortable with.
About a week later I was wandering through our local WalMart and thought I would check out what they had in their glassware section.  My eyes spotted the exact box of glasses that I had purchased in Grand Forks and I stopped...good grief it was $8 for a dozen!  Seriously? And then I smirked as I shook my head and walked away and no, I didn't purchase another dozen.
You know, I thought I was so excited when I found exactly what I wanted in Altona, then I found more of that 'exactly what I wanted' in Grand Forks for an even cheaper price and yet here was exactly what I wanted at the cheapest price right in my own backyard.
As a staff we have started to do a Bible Study together every week on Wednesday morning.  We read a passage of scripture every day and then on Wednesday we get together and discuss what God has been saying to us through His Word.  There was one verse, 2 Timothy 1:14, that did stick out to me this past week but to be honest I wasn't quite sure why and that meant I didn't know what to share with the rest of the staff so I listened carefully to their thoughts and was disappointed that I wasn't able to express myself, but made notes about their thoughts on various verses through 1 and part of 2nd Timothy.  Deep down I was hoping that someone might touch on the verse that really stuck out to me but that didn't happen.  But, it was really interesting the different comments people were making and so I made notes as they spoke learning as we went along.
So, today, I read the portion of scripture that was next on the reading schedule and still my eyes kept wandering back to that verse in 2 Timothy, particularly the last few words, "the treasure which has been entrusted to you" and I thought about my search for those glasses a number of weeks ago.  I really believed that I had found what I wanted in one place, then another and finally I come to find that what I had been after all along was close to home at the best price.
God's treasure, His Word, is entrusted to us, to keep and guard in our hearts.  I have His treasure, I love that thought, His treasure is an inestimable jewel and he has entrusted us with it!!  And He has given to us at the best price...free.  He has not hidden it from us, we don't have to run around to try and find the best treasure because He is waiting to give it to us, if we would just stop chasing after the things of this world.  And we are not required to guard it by ourselves or even discover it all on our own because we have the Holy Spirit, another gift to help us understand and hold that treasure right here in our hearts. No person or situation can cause me to lose it...I'm glad because I'm always losing things, my keys, my glasses, my shoes...but this is something I don't have to worry about misplacing and I don't have to shop around for a new model because of any defects or upgrades, it's the greatest gift I've ever received where the warranty is not just for life, but for eternity.

What an amazing deal eh?

Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you.
